Artists' Legal Information Society (ALIS) is a not-for-profit organization which provides free legal information to artists in Atlantic Canada. ALIS is run by a Board of Directors of lawyers and law students. We support artists in their roles as entrepreneurs by providing legal education on how to both protect and promote their creative works.ALIS was founded in 2010, by a group of law students who recognized that artists often confront unique legal issues and may not have the right tools to address them. This need was not previously being met in Atlantic Canada, while similar organizations have been helping artists access justice for many years in Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia. We are based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, but provide our services throughout Atlantic Canada.We primarily deliver our services in three ways: information sessions, publications, and a legal aid clinic. Our lawyers routinely speak at conferences for artists as well as information sessions for artists' organizations to educate artists about critical issues in Copyright, Contracts, and other areas of law which impact them. We launched our first publication, A Legal Guide for Writers, in June 2013, and are busy at work on guides for other disciplines. Lastly, we match artists seeking help on legal issues with volunteer lawyers to provide free legal information through our website nsalis.com.ALIS works closely with a number of arts organizations to help them provide support to their members, including CARFAC Maritimes, Writers' Federation of Nova Scotia, Music Nova Scotia, Visual Arts Nova Scotia, Centre for Art Tapes, and many more.
