The Recovery Friendly Workplace initiatives are emerging across the United States as crucial interventions in tackling substance use disorders (SUDs), the opioid overdose crisis, and mental health issues. An RSW program aims to proactively prevent SUDs and alleviate mental health challenges by fostering a healthy and secure workplace, offering assistance to struggling employees, and facilitating opportunities for individuals in recovery to reintegrate into or enter the workforce.The profound impact of untreated mental health issues and substance use disorders on workers, employers, and communities is evident. On August 31, 2022, the White House, during National Recovery Month, issued a proclamation advocating for workplace policies in both the public and private sectors to promote inclusive hiring, empower employers to aid in the recovery process, and support companies in retaining talent.Recovery Supportive Workplaces (RSWs) contribute to their communities by recognizing recovery from substance use disorder and mental health challenges as strengths and by actively collaborating with individuals in recovery. RSWs promote a conducive and safe environment where employers, employees, and communities collaborate to effect positive change and remove obstacles for those facing addiction and mental health struggles.To fortify workplace culture, the staff of Recovery Supportive Workplaces will offer training, guidance, and technical support to assist interested companies in adopting evidence-based practices tailored to their specific needs. These dedicated RSW staff members will aid in the development and sustainability of RSW initiatives in workplaces, and their services come at no cost.By establishing a recovery-supportive environment, employers convey a resolute message to their communities, demonstrating an understanding of the importance of a solution-focused approach to addressing addiction and behavioral health directly.
