Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT) has been set up through an Act of Parliament by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Government of India as an "Institute of National Importance" along the lines of IITs and promoted by leading oil & gas PSUs of India, such as ONGC, IOCL, GAIL (India) Ltd., BPCL, OIL, HPCL, EIL and NRL in association with OIDB.
